Apothecia sessile, 0.2–0.9 mm diam.; disc pale to dark red-brown, epruinose or slightly whitish grey-pruinose; margin concolorous with the thallus, thin to thick, entire, ±verrucose to crenulate, often with a visible parathecial ring. Cortex hyaline, 15 µm thick laterally, 15–20 µm thick basally. Amphithecium with large crystals insoluble in KOH (pulicaris-type). Parathecium hyaline, with numerous small crystals soluble in KOH, 10–15 µm thick. Epihymenium reddish brown, K–, without crystals (glabrata-type), c. 10–15 µm thick, with a 1.5 µm thick hyaline layer above. Hymenium, subhymenium and hypothecium hyaline. Paraphyses sparingly branched and thickened apically. Ascospores ellipsoidal, 11.5–15.0 × 6.5–8.0 µm. CHEMISTRY: Thallus and apothecial margin K+ yellow, C+ orange, Pd+ pale orange; containing roccellic acid (major), arthothelin (major), chloroatranorin (submajor), atranorin (submajor), 2,4-dichloronorlich-exanthone (minor), 2,5-dichloronorlichexanthone (minor) and 4,5-dichloronorlichexanthone (minor). | ||
